Work hard to be able to create the life that you always envisioned for yourself.
Nitya Singhal had initially started a company called ‘Incept Designs’ where she used to make digital brochures for people, but eventually she entered into the travel industry while keeping the name of the company intact, as that was where she began.
Nitya loves travelling herself, and strives to provide an amazing travelling experience to others too. And this is also how her journey got started. She was telling a friend about nice places to visit during her trip when Nitya’s cousin noticed her passion and advised her to put her skills to best use and get into the travel industry. And then she started this passion-driven business seven-eight years ago.
According to Nitya, success is something which is two ways, that is, she measures her success in terms of how she and her guests both get benefitted. She always looks after the comfort of her guests first while also yielding just and reasonable profit out of it. She believes that her company’s success is the result of the joint effort of her team and her drive to provide the best possible travel experience to her guests. She doesn’t believe in hierarchy and is open to suggestions and flexible enough to suit the requirements of the guests. This is the advice that she would like to give to everyone who is hoping to come into this industry.
Nitya’s role model is Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, who is a very accomplished lady. The way Kiran balances her personal and professional responsibilities inspires Nitya very much. She says that Kiran has equal proportions of EQ and IQ which is important for a balanced life.
Nitya says that like every business person, she has also made mistakes. She says that once she was dealing with a group of guests from within India who wanted to land in Jaisalmer in a charter plane which was not feasible. Nitya tried convincing them to land in Jaipur, but because of lack of data and solid facts, she finally caved in. Ultimately, the group was not able to land at the Jaisalmer airport and the whole event got ruined for the guests. This is one of the mistakes that she is not very much proud of but has learned from it. An advice that Nitya would like to give to newcomers to the industry is that you should always take full payment in advance so that you don’t have to humiliate yourself demanding the payment after the event, this is a mistake she has also committed.
She says that the future of the tourism industry lies uncertain beyond 2021 due to the COVID crisis. Although she has enquiries from guests from all around the world for 2021 and 2022, she says that a lot has changed and is going to change in this industry. One thing that she is certain of is that the travelling industry would never disappear and is here to stay. There may be changes in methods and modes of travelling, but this is a very basic human habit and it will keep growing.
Nitya says that the biggest challenge that she faced while setting up her company was to regularly encounter gender bias and skepticism towards her judgement from many people. She says that the best way to overcome this is to believe in yourself and keep working. The constant support and faith from her team also motivated her to keep going on.
Nitya loves her work very much and feels lucky to meet many wonderful and talented people throughout her journey. She doesn’t only love her work but she lives it, and also enjoys every moment of it while making amazing friends from all around the world.
She says that there have been many achievements during her journey. Creating a new company out of thin air and elevating it to great heights being the first one of them all. Once she and her team also built a mesmerising stage at the Mehrangarh fort which looked as if it was floating mid-air on special request of a dance performer. They were commended by everyone and the satisfaction on the face of the guests felt like an achievement to Nitya. According to Nitya, the biggest achievement of all is that every guest that she has served has stayed connected to her and that everyone went home satisfied with her service.
Nitya says that she still has to learn how to be more cost efficient and take a look at the economics of every project which she undertakes.
